Why might a company want to use plastic pallets instead of traditional wooden pallets? While some industries just need something to get the job done, other industries have certain requirements that wood pallets don't meet. One of the main reasons for using plastic pallets is the properties of the plastic itself. Usually, trays are made of polyethylene which is not only very durable but also considered hygienic food-grade plastic.
As mentioned earlier, polyethylene is a food-safe plastic. Plastic pallets are very easy to clean and sanitize, making them ideal for warehouses where they can be reused. Additionally, plastic trays are chemically inert, meaning they are immune to: mold; bacteria; pathogens; insects. Therefore, products can be stored on plastic pallets for a long period of time without contamination the pallets.
Unlike wood pallets, which may be chemically treated, plastic pallets have no such requirement. Plus, any contamination acquired during shipping can be easily washed off, unlike wooden pallets that will absorb any harmful chemicals, oils, or spills.
When storing large quantities of items in the refrigerator, plastic trays may be the only option since wood trays are porous and hold moisture. This moisture can then freeze and expand, potentially damaging the structural integrity of the wood pallet.
